Funny how cats all have very distinct personalities, like people. I have two long-haired mutts. Bob loves to be brushed — he actually gallops over to you if you have the brush in hand. I’m sure it feels like a massage. Benway, on the other hand, HATES it. He gets many more mats because we can’t brush him. He hisses if we try. How are your kitties on being brushed?
One day a cat dies of natural causes and goes to heaven. There he meets the Lord Himself. The Lord says to the cat, “You lived a good life and if there is any way I can make your stay in Heaven more comfortable, please let Me know.”
The cat thinks for a moment and says, “Lord, all my life I have lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor.” The Lord stops the cat and says, “Say no more,” and a wonderful fluffy pillow appears.
A few days later, six mice are killed in a tragic farming accident and go to heaven. Again, there is the Lord there to great them with the same offer.
The mice answered, “All of our lives we have been chased. We have had to run from cats, dogs and even women with brooms. Running, running, running; we’re tired of running. Do you think we could have roller skates so we don’t have to run anymore?” The Lord says, “Say no more,” and fits each mouse with beautiful new roller skates.
About a week later the Lord stops by to see the cat and finds him snoozing on the pillow. The Lord gently wakes the cat and asks him, “How are things since you got here?”
The cat stretches and yawns and replies, “It is wonderful here. Better than I could have ever expected. And those ‘Meals On Wheels’ you’ve been sending by are the best!”

Ok. I keep talking about my 20-pound cat. Once in a shelter — and I stress the word once — I saw another cat who appeared to be slightly larger. Does anyone have a cat larger than 20 pounds? If so, what kind is he or she?

If you are lucky enough to have a cat who sleeps with you on your bed, where does your pet position himself? Mine fluctuates between the foot on the right and the space next to my pillow on the left — unless I am silly enough to leave enough room on the pillow, where he will move in and dominate. Other favorite spaces include an empty moving box in my closet, and a cubby hole in the main bathroom. Our other cat Benway, the 20 pounder, likes to crawl on top of my stomach to sleep. This can get quite suffocating with such a large kitty. Benway also likes an antique Queen Anne loveseat that’s in the bedroom. Fortunately it’s old and not in great condition, so a little cat hair won’t hurt it. Your cats’ favorite sleeping places?

Does anyone know of or own a male Calico? This is a cat with three distinct colors — black, orange and white — and NOT a mixed Tabby. I have had two female Calicos in my cat-raising career, but never a male Calico. They are supposedly very rare. Let me know!

When you go to adopt a cat at your local pet shelter, keep this in mind: EVERYONE wants kittens. I volunteered at two shelters in my area, and people would phone constantly asking if we had any kittens (they weren’t interested if we only had adult cats). Yes, kittens are certainly cute. But because everyone wants them, they get snapped up much more quickly than the older cats. And in all honesty, a kitten is much more of a responsibility than an adult cat. So know this the next time you go looking for a new cat: The babies might be adorable but the adults need you more. And BTW, for those who MUST have a kitten, try your shelter during kitten season — May or early June.

As far as I’m concerned, the jury is still out. I think cats just like making messes. Some of the paintings in the book are, however, pretty impressive. Makes you wonder. Thoughts?
