Have a Happy Day from Felix!
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006Hamster and Cat
Tuesday, November 28th, 2006
Last week I tried an experiment. I have a Siberian Winter Hamster, Nico, and she and Bob my cat are quite used to each other. She actually bores Bob. Anyway, Bob has long hair, so I put Nico on his back. While he walked around, she hung on and rode for a few minutes — it was quite cute. I wish I had a camera then; next time I will have to document it!

The Problem with Shelters
Monday, November 27th, 2006![]()
One of the cat shelters I worked for was a wonderful place. They took in feral kitties, gave them all the proper medical attention, gave them a practice run with foster parents, and then adopted them out to others. The only problem was that the woman who ran the place was too selective about adoptive parents — not in her adoption rules, mind you. But because she got too close to a few of the cats, none of the prospective adoptive families was “good enough” for those unlucky felines. So they lived in the shelter much longer than necessary.
Shelter worker experience to share?

Vegetarian Kitties?
Monday, November 20th, 2006![]()
Some of you vegetarian cat parents out there might want to keep kitty on a similar diet as you. Unfortunately, cats cannot survive on veggies alone. They are true carnivores. Their bodies cannot manufacture certain fats and amino acids that are necessary for survival, and the only way they can acquire these nutrients is by eating meat.

Will Neutering Change Your Cat’s Personality?
Friday, November 17th, 2006![]()
Yes it will, but it generally makes your cat a more interesting and enjoyable companion. Neutering has a more profound effect on males than females. It makes cats less destructive, and it reduces their activity level.

Tilting Heads
Friday, November 17th, 2006![]()
My neighbors’ cat, who occasionally peeps out the window at me, has the cutest expression: She will tip her head to the side as if perplexed when looking at me. It’s such a human expression, it’s strange to see it on a cat.
Funny cat expressions you’ve seen?

Cat Bath
Friday, November 17th, 2006![]()
This week I gave Bob a real bath in the tub. At first he resisted, and I had to hold his front paws together so he couldn’t claw me. But after a while he froze — I have had this reaction before with other cats. After we were dried off and brushed, though, it seemed Bob could smell his new cleanliness, and he was very affectionate. My mother taught me to wash my cats once a year, but well…it’s not always that easy.
