Indoor Water Fountains for your Kitty

Friday, August 31st, 2007

fountain.jpgI have an indoor water fountain that I got at walmart for my cats.  The one pictured is the last one I had, which I had gotten from a drugstore.  I quit using this one because the coating on everything began to peel and I didn’t want that in their water.

I keep the fountain on my kitchen table and they just LOVE it!  I have to fill it up every day and wash it out once a week, because they drink it so fast and we have weird water here…

You can get ‘official’ drinking fountain-type products from places like petsmart, etc…. but I tend to really like the little one I got from walmart.

If you get one, make sure it’s big enough… sturdy… so they don’t knock it over.   And make sure it’s made from something that won’t leach stuff into the water and make them sick.

My mother got me a REALLY nice, REALLY expensive fountain from lowe’s, but it was made out of this weird pottery stuff and it made me uncomfortable about letting the cats drink from it.  Glass, plastic, something that just won’t peel or leach into the water.

Try it, your cats will LOVE LOVE LOVE you for it!  :-D

CATS! ARGH! #$^@W$#%

skittlesDon’t get me wrong, I LOVE MY CATS.  But what is it about a herd o’ cats and the full moon?  And I think the eclipse had something to do with it too.

You think cats are graceful?  That’s a LIE!  all LIES LIES LIES!  This bunch can’t walk across the floor this week without taking everything down within a 10 foot radius!

They’re flying, bouncing, weaving, cavorting, it’s UNREAL!  I can’t get from the bedroom to the kitchen without getting tripped 10 times!  And with a full cup of hot coffee that is NOT a good thing!

They’re in my craft stuff, my beads, my snack drawer, hanging off the lamps and curtains!  Sitting on top of the betta tanks, fighting with each other, and destroying rolls of toilet paper!

And Oscar, God bless him, when I clean potty boxes under my craft tables, he gets on the tables and rummages in my hair…. I’m bent over doing a potty box and he’s up there styling!  He’ll dig, knead, yank… It makes me NUTS!  You should SEE my head when he’s done!

Anything that was sitting on a surface has been tossed!  I get in bed I get pounced RELENTLESSLY!  AGGGGG!

I’d try to eat some breakfast but THEY won’t let me… they want it and they’ll have it!

WHY WHY WHY?  It’s a conspiracy… I know it is.  But… I still LOVE my cats… though for the life of me… today… I’m having trouble figuring out WHY!  hahaha!  :-D

Behavioral Issues…some help…

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Do you have a cat who is experiencing some behavioral issues?  Aggression, jealousy and other problems…?  Are you moving?  Have a new person in the house or lost one?  Lost another pet?  Cats are creatures of habit and sometimes when their routine is disturbed, you’ll have problems with them.

There are numerous ways of finding out how to fix these problems.  You can google ‘cat behavior problems’ and find a great many resources…

But what I want to tell you about today is this stuff:

http://feelbach.com/pets.htm

I have tried this and it’s quite amazing.  You can go here and customize your cat’s product to what the problem is.  It’s all natural and you simply put a drop or two in their water and they don’t even know it’s there.

Check it out… and if you do have behavioral problems, don’t just give up.  There are many many reasons that a cat will have issues and pretty much, they’re all fixable.  I’m always ready and available for questions about anything regarding cats and if I don’t know the answer, I’ll sure do all I can to find it for you.  I don’t know how you can contact me yet… but leave me a comment and I’ll get right back to you.

Cat Food Discussion Anyone?

Monday, August 27th, 2007

I’m curious what some of you might think about the different types of cat foods… brand names vs generics vs premium vs stuff full of veggies and grains… etc….

Cats are carnivores.  They eat meat.  However, there are so many foods out there now with all this other stuff in them… what’s up with that?

And then you have the regular types vs the horribly expensive premium foods… is one better than the other?

Now, I’m talking dry food, not the canned variety.

Just curious what you folks think of all this?

Neat Bed Idea…

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

I have alot of plastic shelves throughout my house so my bunch can have alot of places to snooze… rest… look at the world… for awhile, i was just putting a towel on the shelf or a fleece blanket, whatever…

Well, I found these medium size wicker ‘laundry’ baskets at our local Garden Ridge store for 3 bucks.  I got about 6 of them.  I put ribbon through both of the ends at the bottom and then tied the basket to the shelf.  Then I put their towel or blanket in there.

They simply LOVE these things.  It gives them a little privacy for their nap and an enclosed feeling, which some of mine truly love.  And too… there’s been times when one basket has three cats in it!  :-D

Just an idea to give your kitty something new and interesting to sleep in… but if you end up putting it very high for her… make sure you secure it.  It IS rather funny to see one jump in the basket and everything tumble to the floor, but not a good idea!

HMMM?

Friday, August 24th, 2007

I put a box of tissues on a shelf in my bedroom.  I brought the shelves in there (white plastic ones) to give the kitties  something else to get on and sleep on.  I get those wicker laundry baskets on sale, secure them to the shelf, then put a fleece blanket in there and they simply love ‘em.

But I put a box of tissues on the top shelf because they were going to eventually end up in the bathroom.  For the most part today, they left it alone.  I found it in the floor a couple times and it’s full of teeth marks, but intact.  I just kept forgetting to stick ‘em in the bathroom.

Last night I’m lying in bed covered up with cats and I hear the sound of one tissue being pulled from the box. Then another, then another. It’s like one of the bunch is sitting beside the box pulling out one at a time.  I decided, technically, I’m asleep, and I’ll  deal with it in the morning.   It’s not like I haven’t dealt with clouds of paper towels or toilet paper before right?  :-D

Now this morning, there were NO tissues anywhere.   What did they do with them????   Didn’t eat them, mine don’t eat the paper they shred, they just play in it.  Interesting no?  My bunch is always… interesting, if nothing else!  hahahaha!

New Bag of Food and Puking….

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Have you noticed when you open a new bag of food, that your cat will eat like a little pig and then promptly throw it up?  Well, that’s normal in some cats, so don’t sweat it if it happens.  They love the “new” smell of it and they’ll eat too fast and too much.  And then yark it right back up!  It’s an annoying thing… but it happens.  Just wanted to let everyone know, if you didn’t know, that it sometimes happens.  :-D

A Great Book….for Cat Issues

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

I found this online recently and although I haven’t purchased it due to me not working at the moment and I’m majorly broke…from what I see, I’m impressed.  You can sign up for a newsletter and updates, which I’ve done.  This book covers just about everything with cat health and behavior, problems and issues.  I’m not ACTUALLY recommending the book only because I haven’t actually purchased it yet, but i AM recommending that if you have any issues with your cats, that you go to this site and check it out… make your own decision.  As soon as I’m able, I AM going to order this book.  I think it will be an excellent reference guide for a great many issues and full of good information.   In fact, from what I can see, it might make the difference between you being able to fix some problems or get rid of your furry buddy.  Go check it out… dare ya!  :-D

 OH - P.S. - it’s an e-book.

Milk and Kitties…..

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Does your cat like milk?  Are you tempted to give regular milk to kittens?  Unfortunately, although they love the stuff, it’s not good for them.  It has a tendency to run through them and give them the poos…

BUT!  There is hope!  I found that using a lactose intolerant milk, which is just a few cents more than regular milk, solves this problem.

My bunch now expects their bowl of milk when I get up in the mornings to get my coffee.  It causes no digestive issues  and they just love it!  And when I eat cereal, I just use that milk instead since we all have to share the leftover milk in my bowl!

My mom also feeds some outside kitties and she always gives them a bowl of this once a day just to give them an extra treat.

If your cat loves milk but you don’t like what it does to him, or if you have some little ones that might benefit from an extra dose of milk, pick up some of the lactose intolerant milk from your grocery store.  They’ll love you for it!

Ear Mites?

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

Sometimes cats will get earmites… even indoor cats.  Used to, you’d have to put drops in the ears twice a day for about 10 days.  DO NOT USE OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS!!!!  They don’t work and it’s pointless!  And please don’t try any home remedies with this problem either.

When I moved here from Oklahoma, I came with 11 cats.  All of them had ear mites by the time I arrived … why I have no idea, but it was a CHORE to catch them all twice a day and put the drops in!  They did NOT care for that!

First, symptoms of ear mites are black gunk in the ears, head shaking, scratching at the ears…. and if they get bad enough, they can cause a head tilt that won’t go away even when they’re dead and gone and can even kill a cat if it gets bad enough!

If you think your cat has this problem, get a vet appointment…  you can get a product such as frontline, one tube on the back of the neck, that will kill fleas, ticks AND earmites!  Ahh…. modern technology!  A wonderful thing!

But please just remember, don’t let it go on… it’s an easy fix and one that could save your cats life!

Feline Acne … or?

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Does your cat have little black spots under his chin…kind of like black heads?  This could be acne… or it could be a number of other conditions.  One thing that I’ve found is the use of plastic bowls tend to make this problem more prolific in my household.  Changing the bowls to metal has helped.

If you feel your cat has this condition, you can use a number of gentle peroxide shampoos on the chin.  Or take basic peroxide and put a little on a cotton pad and rub the area once a day.  I have used stridex medicated pads with great success.  I use them once a day, gently rubbing the pad on the chin area ONLY, until the problem is gone, usually within a week or so.

If your cat has this issue and it does not go away with these home treatments, have him checked by a vet.  It could be a yeast infection, a certain type of mange, or even ringworm (which by the way is not an actual worm).  Treatment options for these different conditions varies, so it’s best to have it checked by a vet so the proper course of treatment can be given to your baby.   :-D
