Black Cats: Being Misunderstood
Yesterday, a funny thing happened while I was outside gardening. Out of a gap in the back corner fence of the yard, a young black cat came galloping over. He had a flea collar on, so I knew that he must have belonged to one of the neighbors. As I patted him and scratched his ear for him, I couldn’t help but think how black cats have been persecuted throughout history.
I did a quick search on the topic, and Wikipedia mentioned that black cats are thought of as being good, and bad luck, depending on the culture. I was appalled to read how black cats have been burned and tortured, especially during the Middle Ages when people were being accused of witchcraft. Even today, many animal shelters won’t allow the black cats in their care to be adopted during the Halloween season, for fear that these cats will be harmed.
After a quick hug, I bid the black cat a fond farewell and watched as it walked to the front yard and leisurely sat under a lilac bush. The next time you see a black cat, don’t think of it as being bad luck. Rather, admire the elusive beauty of these often-misunderstood cats.
