The Elusive Male Calico

Does anyone know of or own a male Calico? This is a cat with three distinct colors — black, orange and white — and NOT a mixed Tabby. I have had two female Calicos in my cat-raising career, but never a male Calico. They are supposedly very rare. Let me know!

Hey Jill,
Most of my cat knowledge is derived from the more than 30 I’ve rescued and loved (currently Shadow and Tigger, tabby brothers, share my life with three dogs, two guinea pigs and an adopted horse).
I’ve volunteered at shelters, and interacted with folks all over the country, and NEVER came across a male calico, or anyone else who had.
I have, however, seen two-headed calfs, eight-legged frogs, and other anomalies, so I’m sure the elusive male calico could be more than just legend. My cats don’t have a clue. They’re quite circumscribed, you know.
Meantime, I’ll keep my eyes open!

I, too, have had two female calicos in a long cat-raising career, but never a male. I’ll keep an eye out, though. I do a lot of volunteer work at shelters and rescue programs.

Thanks Gayle and Tim. I’m just curious as to whether one actually exists. -Jill

Hi Jill, Just wanted to let you know they DO exist! I have one. When I first found him, my PREVIOUS vet laughed when I told him I had a male calico! When I took Simone in to get “spayed” - the docs didn’t find ovaries - but did NEUTER him! He is 7 and healthy now!

I had a true male calico. You can see photos of him on my myspace page. Search janetcraig08 on myspace. He was a dog like cat and always wanted to be around people. He died last week of some stomach problem in one day with no warning. I am very sad because I know I will never find another guy like him.
