The pet food recall story
Mornin’ cat lovers!
I feel like I need to comment on the whole pet food recall thing. From what I can gather, the problem stemmed from a batch of wheat gluten that was tainted with rat poison. This in turn got into lots and lots of different brands of cat and dog food.
Last year, one of my Beloved Cats, Demi, died of feline diabetes. When she got sick, I learned how harmful wheat gluten and ANY grains are to cats. Cats are “obligate carnivores” as in they gotta have lots and lot of protein, and really don’t need any carbohydrates in their diets. As a result, since then, we’ve fed our herd only with grain-free foods. We personally feed Wellness brand canned food, Evo Innova dried kibble, and an occasional can of Merrick meat food.
I’m so glad we switched back then! I wasn’t too worried about those brands, since I knew they didn’t contain grains. A local small pet shop wasn’t affected much, either, because they predominantly carry the healthier foods. Larger chain box stores, however, like PetsMart and Petco, weren’t so lucky. Even our local grocery store had quite a few empty shelves.
Whole Foods in Austin had no problems, either, because none of their foods contain this tainted ingredient.
I realize that a lot of people can’t afford the higher priced foods, but after paying Demi’s huge vet bills and seeing what she went through, it’s worth it to us. The better brands are slowly creeping into the big stores, and that’s a good thing. There are lots of online places that you can order from, and I’ll talk about these in a future post.
In the meantime, get your daily dose of catnip love!

Hi there, Please I would like somebody help me to find information on like feeding my cat affected by The “pets recall”. I cannot find an alternative food or remedy -outside the food in the market that she doesn’t want to eat any more-.
For a month I have been feeding her with Pedialyte and water with honey, that is the only thing that she want to drink. The veterinarian haven’t done to much for her and he only suggested me “putting her to sleep” after charged me $ 600. I can’t afford another vet. and I want to keep my cat alive. Could somebody please, help me. Thanks,

Was your cat affected by the tainted food? If so, I’d call your vet back and let them know that. Or call a local animal shelter to see if any vets in the area are handling that situation. some will work on a sliding scale based on your income.
If she did eat the bad food, she’ll have to see a vet. It’s better now because they know what’s causing the sickness, at least now they know what to treat.
good luck with your kitty,
bc

I feed my babies Wellness too. My older toy poodle eats the canned senior formula and the younger ones eat dry. Innova is also an excellent one!

Bobbi, FYI, Wellness, while not affected by the recall because they claim to use none of the alleged affected ingredients, provide their own ingredients and inspectors, is produced at…you guessed it…Menu Foods. This was verified by me today via phone contact with a customer service rep for Wellness. Also, Innova dry food is not manufactured at Menu but Innova canned is!!!!
