Why Every Winery Needs a Cat (Part 2)

This morning I was delighted to see that Farley had posted a great list of reasons why every winery should have a cat on her blog, Wine Outlook. She graciously invited me to add to her list. I worked for two wineries, both of which had resident felines, and I have visited several others with cats on the property. Here’s what I think:
Why Every Winery Needs a Cat (Part 2):
1. A friendly cat hanging around the tasting room entrance makes a great greeter.
2. A cat gives a winery a more distinct personality, especially if the cat is unusual in any way (extra large, unique color, etc.). This will help people remember the winery, and is also good for marketing — Farley had mentioned the merchandising opps, so I am piggy backing on that.
3. Cat pee is a common wine descriptor. If a customer complains about a wine’s aroma, you can just blame it on the cat. ![]()
4. If someone has too much to drink, the cat can be trained to bat at their ankles to get them to slow down. ![]()
5. Cats are good decorations.

Sadly, they aren’t so welcome at off-site wine tastings. I had to put a sweet, skinny kitty outside last night where I was pouring at a fundraiser. The ladies in charge were freaking out and couldn’t catch him. But he came to me…unfortunately. I didn’t want to do it.It was hard to see him peering through the glass doors.
